Lumona Tires

Industrial design — transparent tire, integrated LED, custom electronics
Sergey Kim, 2016

Lumona tire glowing blue on a bicycle at night

The first bicycle tires with light built into the rubber itself. A transparent tire embedded with LEDs that cast a glow visible from every direction. When the rider brakes, the tires pulse red, turning the entire wheel into an omnidirectional brake light.

The idea began with a simple problem: cyclists are hard to see at night, and existing lights only point forward and back. By making the tires themselves the light source, the bicycle becomes visible from 360 degrees.
